One balloon, OR a plastic comb. (This science experiment can work with both)
A piece of string or thread
Small pieces of dry 'O' shaped oat cereal.
• Cut the piece of string approximately 12-16 inches long. Tie a piece of the cereal to one end of the string. Tie or tape the other piece of string to the middle of a door way or edge of a table. (Try to find a place that will allow the cereal to dangle freely with no obstructions in the way).
• Wash the comb with hot soapy water and dry completely.
• Run the comb through long dry hair about 10 times, OR rub the comb quickly on a wooly sweater. (The comb will now be charged).
• Starting from either the left or right side, bring the comb towards the cereal nice and slow and stop as you see the cereal swing towards and touch the comb. Keep the comb still and hold it, and now wait and watch until the cereal moves away by it self.
• Move the comb and then try to touch the piece of cereal again. The cereal should move away this time as you get close to the cereal.
When the comb or balloon was rubbed onto your clothing/hair it came to have a negative charge as electrons now went from your hair/clothing to the balloon/comb.
The hanging cereal was neutral and was attracted to the negative charge. The electrons went from the comb/balloon to the cereal when they touched.
This made both objects come to have the same negative charge which in turn caused the cereal to move away or repel from the comb/balloon.
If you have preschool children who like to color than you probably have a whole bunch of little odd and end pieces of wax crayons all over.
A great way to get rid of them and teach your pre k children a FUN preschool science activity is found below.
*PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION
Have your children or preschoolers gather all the little pieces of wax crayons that they have laying around and are not using.
*Careful Adult Supervision is required around Hot stoves and Hot Wax!
Children should ONLY be observing at this point!
Lightly grease an old pot with cooking spray or oil on the inner bottom and sides.
Take the paper off of the crayons if there is still paper on them.
Place crayons inside and on low heat melt the crayons.
**Show the children how the crayons are melting.
Once the crayons have melted, pour the melted crayon wax into old lightly greased (oil, cooking spray) ice cube trays or other odd shaped items that may act as molds. (old film canisters, old ice cube trays etc..)
Have them visible so the prek children can watch them and see when they become firm and solid.
Once the molds have set, pop them out and watch your children have tons of fun, as if they just received a brand new box of crayons.
*The multicolored shapes/solids are so fun to draw and color with.
The children have just experienced a fun preschool science activity and can enjoy using it through a creative art experience.
Have Fun!
