Science Activities Using Light Tables for Toddlers, Preschool, and Kindergarten Children
Light tables are a fantastic way to accomplish this. Do you have a light table in your classroom? If not, we suggest looking at investing in one for your classroom. It will become an essential teaching tool that you can use over and over again with countless science activity ideas you can create for your toddler, preschool or kindergarten classroom children.
In the light table pictured above you can see that there are 3 different colored jeweled pieces spread out on the surface of it. The pre-k children had a great time organizing them into colors, looking at them through magnifying glasses, and watching the light sparkle through by moving the jewels around. The children also used their fine motor skills when we added science tweezers and the children were able to handle the jewels using the tweezers.
Here are some examples of other items you can use on a light table for science ideas:
- cut up tissue paper (variety of colors)
- crystallized rocks
- birds nest
- stained glass items
- colored liquids in a closed sealed container
- plastic gems/jewels
- and more……(anything you can think of that will allow the light to emit through)
Light tables come in various forms and sizes and a wide range of prices so you are sure to find the one that’s just right for your preschool classroom, and budget.
Have fun adding a light table to your science center and you’ll see the many benefits it will have on your students and the quality of their education.
